  • The hybrid drum and bass duo on conquering the States.

  • Ivy Lab are a living lesson in how to adapt and evolve. The duo, made up of British producers Sabre and Stray, started out as a drum & bass trio united by shared musical histories. Now they make hybrid bass music primed for festival stages and big rooms. By looking back to their mutual love of old-school rap and hip-hop, Sabre and Stray have come up with a sound that finds a middle ground between drum & bass, dubstep, hip-hop and techno, powered by colossal sound design. It's a formula that seems obvious when you hear it, but Ivy Lab have figured out a way to make it their own. The duo debuted their new sound with a club night in London and later a record label, both called 20/20, and have found like minds in artists like Sinistarr, Fixate and Fracture. But Stray and Sabre's mongrel approach has earned them an enormous audience in the US, far bigger and more dedicated than they might have expected. It's an unlikely turn for two UK drum & bass producers to find so much success in America, but it's also driven them even deeper into their heady, festival-ready style. RA's Andrew Ryce sat down with the duo to talk about their meteoric rise and success across the pond ahead of an upcoming tour of North America that will see them settle down in Los Angeles to record new music.
