  • GiGi FM is a trained dancer, which gives her a deeper insight into the intrinsic relationship between music and bodily movement. You can read a lot more about her philosophy and approach in the interview below, but you don't even need to know about it to hear this in her RA Podcast—a collection of swirling deep techno that rivals anything made by the usual cohort of "hypnotic" techno heads. Looking at the tracklist doesn't really do it justice, but the names involved give you an idea of what to expect: Varuna, ASC, Donato Dozzy, The Orb, Sunju Hargun. This is techno that ripples rather than bludgeons, that moves with an ethereal grace, where tracks bleed into one another beautifully, with a few surprises, too. While you're here, you should check out her Magnetite EP for Bambounou's label Bambe, already one of the young year's most bewitching techno records. But if this is your introduction, then turn off the lights, light a candle or some palo santo, and sink into two hours of your new favorite techno DJ. What have you been up to recently? To be honest, at the moment, I'm in a full "head down working" motion. Practicing mindfulness, brain/body rewiring with yoga, dance practices and swimming. Focusing a lot on music production, developing my dance/music/visual project GEM (Gestural Electronic Music) with my collective, making videos for the diary ambient album I released last December (Kiwi Synthesis Diary 21K) and forthcoming music collaborations. What are you grateful for these days? After the past few years, I am grateful for my parents' health and mine, having a roof, having amazing friends in my life and the fraternity in between people in this world. How and where was the mix recorded, and can you tell us the idea behind the mix? I still don't have my own CDJs (please go fund me..?) so I went to my friends Sarah & Julia's studio in east Berlin. They have a lovely set up and energy there. Thank you girls for letting me record there. I love to write (and always do) mini-synopses for mixes and tracks. Without sounding cheesy—I probably will, but it's just how I feel—music is storytelling. Takes you on journeys that transports you to different realms, feelings and even dimensions. It's nice to dive in and know which narrative you are wanting to create. It really helps in my creative process and I hope the people listening get to feel it too. This mix is called "a sea of stars & lucid dreams" ~ heart-piercing was her song as the song of the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars... ~ How does your history/training in dance and ballet inform your relationship to techno or the way you write/produce your music? Dancing is the way to express music, together it expresses your soul. Since the beginning of time, humankind has always taken communal rituals in dancing as the best attempt to tune into the underlying essence of the universe, which was born out of sound and constant intense vibrating atoms. For me all sounds are colors and movements, therefore don't go without another. When I make music in a 'conventional' way, AKA using my computer, VSTs and/or hardware for example, I work mostly standing up because it all starts with my body and the colors of the feelings or realms I want to create or travel to. For as long as music and dance have been art forms, bodily expression has been an intrinsically linked output to consciousness and language forms. We feed on what is felt to manifest our feelings through sound or gestures. From the shape-shifting limbs transforming across the dance, to the form of frequencies filling the air and spaces, dance and music are the release point for affection, excitement and ecstasy. What words cannot say that yet the dancing and the music can touch us on. How do the themes of metaphysics, philosophy and astrology manifest in your music? Where to dive in first :) For me, music, dance and technology broaden our ability to perceive what surrounds us and what is in the depth of our inner selves. Through them, we can influence our environment, learn that matter is not insensitive, but has rhythm, organization and extended cognition. Bodies and music emit frequencies that connect us to our collective consciousness. They are a reservoir of knowledge impressed by emotions passed down from generations and their sensory perception, that makes them inherent and partaking to nature. Bodies relate and evolve with each other. They are conditioned by their own vulnerability. Bodies and sonic languages become fluid and functional compasses to get our bearings in an evermore hybrid reality. The positions of the planets and the cosmos that surrounds us is a fact and definitely affects us in one way or another, I believe anyways. Even if you're not into astrology or the inherited interpretations of our ancestors you definitely have no choice but to acknowledge the cosmic skies that encircle us. Whether you choose to follow ancestral beliefs or not, the interpretation is yours to be made, and to fit your feelings and reality. I feel very connected to this and respect our lineal knowledge. I follow my intuition and my own 'flow' which I often see how it links to astrological events and naturally to how I live my artistic practices. What's one social or political cause you want the world to pay more attention to? To be honest I am an activist at heart—I dare you to make me choose one. Here are some movements/causes/matters & issues who deserve more attention and actions: BLM Violence against women LGBTQ and trans rights Marginalised minority communities discriminations, inequalities & struggles worldwide War in Somalia, Yemen, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Sudan, Haiti, Colombia, Myanmar, Ukraine The list goes on… The world is a very weird and highly unstable place right now, we all need to take the actions we can and try to make it a better place. What are you up to next? Probably getting a take away tiramisu and strapping on my body my motion sensors for some GEM actions with the crew.
