  • Take a listen to René Breitbarth's productions, and you'll find that his original hometown has obviously had a great effect on his sound. Taking the hypnotic qualities of techno and adding the swing of classic house, there is a melodicism to his work that is unmistakably Cologne. Breitbarth fell in love with electronic music in the early '90s whilst clubbing at the city's Space and Warehouse venues, and it was his experiences there that convinced him to start producing his own tracks. The next step for Breitbarth was the launch of the Treibstoff label with co-founder Marcel Janovsky, which they continue to run after more than ten years on the scene. Apart from his releases on Treibstoff—which include two full-lengths and countless singles—Breitbarth has contributed to labels such as Sub Static, Spectral Sound and Dessous, even proving himself as an advocate of the digital scene with the first release on Jay Haze's Textone netlabel. He's looking to carry this on with his digital-only label, Deep Data, which was launched just a few months ago. As a DJ, Breitbarth indulges both the housier and more techno sides of his sound, and can often be found spinning marathon sets at Club der Visionäre in his new hometown of Berlin. His RA podcast offers a condensed insight into one of these sessions, featuring tracks from Masomenos, Cassy and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts. We caught up with Breitbarth by e-mail to ask him about the mix, Club der Visionäre and Deep Data. What have you been working on recently? On the third Deep Data release. It's out now and called "Drive." Also I did three tracks for a 12-inch EP on Treibstoff which will come out in March, and two tracks for IRR. I also contributed a single track to the first label compilation of Contentismissing. Where and how was the mix recorded? It was recorded in my studio with Traktor Scratch using control vinyls. This plus a MIDI-controller is usually my setup while DJing. I swapped to playing digitally in 2004. Can you tell us a little about the mix? It's more or less representing a Club de Visionaire set in Berlin for me. Floating up and down, never getting too stressy but always shaking. :) Your bio says you draw inspiration from playing at Club de Visionaire. How is it going down there in the winter? As the CDV is an open-air venue it's unfortunately closed in winters. But, then again, that's also part of the magic there. I'm DJing and playing live elsewhere in these cold months but I do try to keep the CDV vibe by producing tracks with my CDV DJ partner Tobias Deschamps. Can you tell us about your Deep Data project came about? That was actually also influenced by CDV. I wanted a platform for my deep/housey tracks with total independence. It's a digital label mainly, but I'm also planning on "best of" vinyl releases in the near future. I'll bring out other artists there as well. Deep Data 004 will be re-edits of my earlier releases from some special artists.
