- A self-described outsider, Pan Daijing makes art that is raw, abrasive, vulnerable and challenging. Growing up in Guiyang, Southwest China, before studying in Beijing and later moving to Berlin in 2016, her work covers dance, sound design, performance art and art installations.
Daijing's two albums on PAN—Lack in 2017 and 2021's Jade—show that her storytelling compositions are rooted in noise music, using both live performance and recording methods to challenge our perception and understanding of music. Her work has been exhibited and performed at landmark cultural institutions and events like Tate Modern, Barbican Centre, Berghain, Unsound, London Contemporary Music Festival, Palais de Tokyo, the Biennale of Moving Image in Geneva and the 13th Shanghai Biennale.
In the time since releasing Lack, Daijing, who is self-taught, has worked on operatic compositions and performance for several singers. In 2019, at London's Tate Modern, she composed, directed and performed Tissues, an immersive and multi-sensory installation that featured 12 dancers and opera singers. Later this month, PAN will release a four-part audio excerpt from the performance.
Ahead of the release of Tissues, in conversation with Mariana Berezovska, Daijing spoke about preparing for her latest exhibition, opera, ritual, cooking and solitude.
