  • Hailing from Jamaica, Dion McKenzie, AKA TYGAPAW, has become a staple of the New York dance music scene by using the migrant's sense of outsiderness as a rallying point for the city's queer Caribbean community. Their club-night-cum-label Fake Accent refers to the process of adapting to new environs while its successor Shottas specifically focusses on Caribbean sounds with a music policy dubbed "cunty dancehall." As an artist seeking "more control of the creative process", McKenzie graduated from playing guitar to self-taught producer, a process culminating in last year's debut album for NAAFI, Get Free. In the afternoon before their performance at Unsound 2021 in Kraków, McKenzie sat down for a live interview with Resident Advisor editor-in-chief Whitney Wei. Covering the artistic relevance of fashion and the recent development of New York nightlife, McKenzie also covers their love of Whitney Houston and research into the roots of homophobic language in dancehall.
