  • Shanique Marie might be best known as lead vocalist of Jamaica's innovative Equiknoxx collective. But with the release of her debut album Gigi's House, she's fully cemented her status as an artist of note in her own right. It places her versatility as a singer front and centre, displaying a range from R&B to jazz and soul. Identified as a powerhouse vocalist from an early age, Marie bucked expectations by channeling influences like Ella Fitzgerald—who she describes as "my mother in another life"—Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill into regional styles like dancehall and reggae. But when her delivery does become more spoken and rhythmic, like on dancehall anthem "Ring The Alarm," her lyrical whit, controlled diction and scene painting cast her as an imposingly authoritative and wise figure. In conversation with writer, DJ and label owner Theo Fabunmi-Stone, Marie shares the life experiences and philosophies that have made her such a multifaceted artist. We hear of her meeting future Equiknoxx partners via MSN Messenger and Hi5, dealing with challenges like vocal nodules, and how she's developed stylistically in the years following her debut solo EP in 2015.
