- Khloe Bailey Obazee created the digital platform PRIM to increase accessibility to stories by black writers. It has developed into a space that brings the teeming variety of expression behind the black experience to the forefront. While it celebrates and archives works by all levels of African, Caribbean and Afro Latinx authors, its database of over 700 writers is a resource for discovering emerging authors working outside the spotlight and traditional narrative forms. PRIM also goes beyond the written word with spoken and visual formats, and aggregates black-owned book shops.
PRIM grew out of OKHA, a bookclub with a focus on queer and black writers. It also seeks to engage people in the act of reading itself and broaden conceptions of what constitutes storytelling. For this edition of RA's ongoing collaboration with Black Minds Matter, Andrew Mensah speaks to Obazee about the stories behind PRIM and OKHA, learning the importance of making reading accessible, storytelling in music and creating outside of existing systems.
