  • Nat Maddix got the idea for the House Gospel Choir on a dance floor in 2011. Beginning with twelve people in a Hackney rehearsal space, the group began creating gospel versions of house tracks and house versions of gospel classics. By the time of their first booking at Glastonbury's Acoustic Stage, their ranks had swelled to thirty members, comprising singers, DJs and instrumentalists. The group also holds a monthly rehearsal open to the public at Rich Mix in East London, pairing a guest artist with a 200-strong choir. Now numbering over 150 members, the group released their debut album Re/Choired in October, 2020, which features the likes of Todd Terry, Wookie and DJ Spen. In conversation with Heléna Star, Maddix tells the story behind the choir's rise, their first Glastonbury appearance and the challenges of managing rehearsals via Zoom.
