  • Deadbeat is Scott Monteith, Canadian by birth, Berliner by choice. Monteith was among the many thousands of ravers that had their lives changed in Toronto in the mid-'90s. Plastikman was one love. So was drum & bass. But it was dub techno that had the most lasting impact. Working in the fertile fin de siècle Montreal scene, Monteith developed a unique take on the genre that seems to change with every subsequent album. That has much to do with the critical, yet nurturing scene that helped put the Canadian city—and its famed Mutek festival—on the electronic music map. Monteith has since moved on to Berlin and, in the process, gone even further toward the dance floor in recent years. But with the arrival of his newest album, Drawn & Quartered, he's made one of his most ambient works yet. RA sat down with Monteith recently to chart all of the above and more.
