  • For some, social media is a symbol of the decay of modern society, but it's also the de facto format for artists interested in self-promotion and cultivating a fan base. Whether you like it or not, the illusion of visibility and popularity that social media imparts has become a key industry metric in the past decade, encouraging artists to take their posts as seriously as their music. This thorny issue provides the topic of this week's Exchange, which is a recording of a panel discussion held as part of RA's conference programme at last year's Dekmantel Festival. Moderated by RA social media manager Christian Murphy, it sees Sassy J, Varg and Hieroglyphic Being sharing their perspectives on the pros and cons of social media promotion. Over the course of 40 minutes, we get a sense of the pressures and opportunities social media presents, as well as the strategies each artist uses to get what they want from different platforms. The RA Exchange is also available on Spotify.
