  • We chat with a master of big breakdowns.

  • Bülent Gürler makes club tracks that stay with you. A big-room specialist with an ear for addictive grooves and mammoth breakdowns, this veteran German artist has been a go-to for DJs on the festival circuit for years—Sven Väth, Ricardo Villalobos and Seth Troxler are just a few of the top-tier DJs who take Butch tracks with them to every gig. In the right hands, his tracks become monsters with the power to send a dance floor into a frenzy (just ask The Black Madonna). As you might expect from the sound of his perennially upbeat tunes, Gürler is a laid-back and friendly guy. Beneath the surface, though, is a self-aware and deep-thinking individual. We hear Gürler's two sides on this week's Exchange, recorded in RA's Berlin office earlier this month. Speaking with Matt Unicomb, Gürler recounts his humble beginnings in Mainz in western Germany (where he still lives today), and his numerous run-ins with the law. Gürler looks back on his life's most tumultuous periods and the hard work that got him to where he is today. As he says, "If I can make it, anyone can."
