  • Thinking deeply about techno with the Stroboscopic Artefacts boss.

  • For Lucy, techno is no laughing matter: it's a form of ritual, an intellectual pursuit and a deeply personal expression all rolled into one. He discovered electronic music at a record store in Sicily, where he grew up, and got acquainted with the power of soundsystems and dance floors at dub parties on the island. Producing and DJing came a bit later, while he was studying in Paris. But the project that's been his biggest undertaking, Stroboscopic Artefacts, took shape when he moved to Berlin. It's a wholly unique techno label, mixing dance floor tropes with considerably more experimental elements—often within the space of the same track. He's also brought mastering and design under one roof, giving the label an exceptionally tight aesthetic. Stroboscopic Artefacts celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, with label showcases at some of Europe's best clubs and a series of EPs from its family of artists. On the eve of the festivities, Lucy stopped by our Berlin office to explain his approach, and the twists and turns that helped him arrive there.
