  • Roy Davis Jr. and Zed Bias aren't two names you'd immediately place together. But their collaboration for Bias's upcoming album, which should be released later this year through Loefah's Swamp81 imprint, shows that the Chicago house veteran is still keeping an open mind (and ear) over 25 years into his career. Davis was in and around his hometown's house scene almost from the beginning. He counted Lil' Louis and Marshall Jefferson among his friends and key influences and ended up playing keys for Phuture, the group credited as the inventors of acid house. It wasn't until the early '90s, though, and his releases through New York's Strictly Rhythm (for whom Davis worked as an A&R for many years) that he established himself as a house music star in his own right. In "Who Dares To Believe In Me?" and "Gabrielle" he has two bona fide classics to his name—and in the case of the latter, he helped kickstart the garage scene in the UK when the track was released in 1996. With Davis' new album, Destroy & Rebuild, in the pipeline, we took the opportunity to spend time with him during a recent UK tour.
