Biography

  • DJ NORI is a Japanese house music DJ.
DJ Nori is a leading light in the Japanese club scene and has been so for almost 40 years. Nori began his deejay career in 1979 in Sapporo. In 1986 he moved to New York City.It was there he met Larry Levan and through Larry he played at many of New York’s most prestigious venues including a residency at The Paradise Garage. He became friends with club luminaries David Mancuso, Walter Gibbons, Danny Krivit, Timmy Regisford, Little Louie Vega, Nick Jones and Francois K. His time in New York placed him at the epicentre of the birth of club culture. Testament to this is his role in the film “Maestro” by Josell Ramos (2004) In 1989 DJ Nori returned home to take up residency at legendary Tokyo nightclub “Gold”, while continuing to travel overseas to play at various parties and events including i-D magazine’s parties in Italy and a plethora of major clubs throughout Europe and The United States. DJ Nori is famous for his long term residencies in both Tokyo and Shanghai proving time and time again his expertise in supporting international touring deejays including DJ Harvey, Lord G and Kym Lightfoot. Indeed, whenever the late David Mancuso (RIP) visited Japan to host a Loft party he insisted on support from only one artist, of course, his old friend DJ Nori. In 2001 DJ Nori released his first EP on “Flower” label to much acclaim. Prior to it’s worldwide release Danny Krivit championed the track “Nomad” at the Body and Soul events. Since that time DJ Nori has released 4 original tracks on “Flower” label. In 2013 he released the “We don’t know” EP on “Running Back” with a remix of “Happy Sunday” by Maurice Fulton. He has gone on to release tracks and mixes on such prestige labels as Octave Lab, Liquid Recordings, Strictly Rhythm, West End Records, Salsoul Records and T.K.Disco. The 30th anniversary of DJ Nori was a huge event for the city of Tokyo featuring performances by many of his friends but none more special than a tribute to Nori from (UK’s) Jocelyn Brown herself. In 2013 he took up his current residency at Club Zero. DJ Nori is a true maestro of music through his impeccable track selection, his timing, and his seamless mixing, making him a highly respected, highly desirable feature artist on the world stage.
